Danube-ships
Looking at the Wachau from the "waterfront" is for many visitors a very special experience. During a crusade through the valley you see the Wachau in a gentle way. The landscape passes by, without stress you can enjoy nature and culture in harmony. At the same time you can also enjoy specials from kitchen and cellar.

Where history comes alive
Dürnstein, the seat of the powerful medieval Kuenring dynasty, is the perfect place to tell tales of long ago and let history come alive. You can almost imagine this fortified town on the Danube peopled again with ruthless robber barons, pious crusaders, merry abbots, proud ship captains and wealthy traders, all making their way through the picturesque streets, milling around the small square with the feared stocks, or entering the monastery wine cellars.

Where romanticism never fades
Most people associate Dürnstein with a story about Richard Lionheart. The famous English king is said to have ridiculed the Austrian flag on the third Crusade. Returning home in disguise through Austria, he was regocnized, captured and sent to the Dürnstein fortress, where he remained locked up until being freed by his faithful vassal, the minstrel Blondel. Altough this story is not completely accurate historically, it has something in common with everything else in Dürnstein and Loiben: it is very romantic!

The Marille
The Marille, the Austrian word for "apricot", is as integral a part of life in the Wachau as the vine. When the apricot trees begin blooming, normaly at the beginning of spring in early April, the narrow valley is awash with delicate pink blossoms. And anyone who has not yet tried the local apricot dumplings, apricot cake or "strudel", or an apricot brandy, has not really had a true taste of the Wachau.

The wine
Since many centuries vine has been cultivated in the Wachau. The special climate, the ground and the careful work of the wine-growers let the grapes bekome excellent wines. Every year the vintners produce high-qualities, the sorts "Riesling" and "Grüner Veltliner" of the Terraces in the Wachau are famous in the world.
